Antique Pie Safe Makeover

[If you click a affiliate link, I can receive a small commission. It does not affect my opinion as they are all my own.]

Today I’m teaming up with several bloggers to share items that we have found in a thrift shops, estate sales, yard sales or side of the road items and share how we turn them into something beautiful.

44AAEA51-F91F-499F-85C6-73CC4C0E08F3Antique Pie Safe

I have wanted to find a pie safe for our home for the longest time! I was so grateful when my Father-In-Law offered me one of his pie safe’s! I knew immediately where I wanted to use it in our new DIY Barndominium! I thought it would be gorgeous in our bathroom and we could store towels and linens in it!

Check out our DIY Barndominium here.

Before Photos

We can’t have a diy makeover without the before photos, right?!

BBB96636-59FD-47E8-9010-E79F1AD53602

This is the before photo after I’d taken out the shelves and the drawer. The cabinet had several layers of paint, from green to yellow and white primer with a couple layers of really old stain!

Time to Strip & Sand

72F61151-D410-416E-A91C-809655BF3E06

I decided to sand the entire piece first, with my orbital sander. Here is a similar one to mine. Next, I used Citri Strip for the entire piece. I like using this stripper better than others as it’s not such a harsh chemical to use and breathe in. Grab it at Home Depot. I stripped the cabinet four times and in between each time, I used my razor to remove the old paint and stain.

1DD28D0D-9E5F-4B15-AFB3-B45EC25F20EB

The pie safe also had a sheet of vintage yellow flowered contact paper with  layer of glue on it. It took a lot of tugging but I got it all off! I also decided to remove the old screens from each door. Each screen had a layer of staples that I removed as well.

The interior side walls were also painted with a bright yellow paint. Here is about 50% through the stripping process on those walls.

For the shelves, I decided to sand with my orbital sander instead of stripping. Look at those layers of paint and stain.

B3FDA641-B025-4D03-9E4A-7FB17F1226DB

On the backside of the shelves, there was an Army printed wording in black writing. It looks like these shelves were made from an old wooden Army shipping crates. It makes me think about all of the families who have owned this pie safe over the years and repairs that were made just like we were doing now!

F08450C8-FC79-4C85-964B-D0ADA8421C72

The exterior side walls also had a wooden ruler that had been used for trim at one time but was only revealed when the Citri Strip had removed all of the old stain.

107366CC-7757-4114-8C27-3692DB52F8A4

I love being able to think about all of the other people who owned this pie safe before me. It such an honor to have such a beautiful piece!

Time to Seal

F67E792F-56DD-4046-9DA1-DD78B97063F2

Before I began sealing, I cleaned the pie safe with good ole soap and water! For the wax, I used Minwax Grain Highlighting Finishing Wax.

FF290A34-1602-4CBC-8970-87D2D33331D9

I wanted a wax that would highlight the wood’s natural beauty along with give it a slight white matte finish.

Repair Time

The pie safe drawer needed to replace all three sides of the drawer. It also needed a new drawer bottom. Two of the sides and the bottom were press board.

005B7026-C42A-4A86-9B8F-DC1752632B7E

I grabbed a 1/4 inch oak craft board and traced the old sides, marked with a pencil and cut with my saw

704313A5-B45B-43BA-A614-5C6B60EB67C3

I did the same for my drawer bottom. I also traced with a pencil, cut with my saw and used a 1/4 oak craft board.

FE93BC05-97A9-4E61-B0AE-5D09D2517420

My husband made grooves for the drawer sides so that the drawer bottom could slide into.

Here is a close up of the cut grooves.

63111AFB-85A5-4F7B-8075-AC450F63E834

My husband also cut notches out of the bottom exterior of the drawer so that the drawer could slide in and out from the drawer slides.

Thrifty Mirror Makeover

Thrifty Mirror Makeover

Today on the blog, myself and a few other bloggers will be sharing our finds from thrift shops, estate sales, yard sales or rummage sales.

On beautiful fall Saturday, we were all out as a family, running errands and I couldn’t pass up the chance to go to a huge rummage sale! We arrived about 30 minutes prior to the sale being over and that is prime time for a good deal because every single item was one dollar! I saw someone walk out with a loveseat for $1! I stumbled upon a large 90’s vibe mirror and I knew it would fit in perfectly with my neutral Christmas décor that I had been planning for months!

Here is the before pic of the mirror.

9E70D424-E7B5-4A33-A61A-D9634D3E7D65 I knew that a couple coats of my homemade chalk paint  would freshen up this mirror!

3DA6E1DA-C8ED-43E8-9915-D6B09B928451

I painted two coats of paint with light sanding in between each coat. I also distressed very lightly after the 2nd coat, wiped with a dampened cloth and added clear wax!

534A7681-1281-413C-96B0-EACF11C111A8

I couldn’t be any happier with my $1 rummage sale find!!

Vintage DIY Chenille Pillows

Vintage DIY Chenille Pillows

Hey y’all! It’s time for our monthly Thrift Store Challenge and I’ve teamed up with several of my blogging friends today! 💃🏽 The rules: We each need to find an item from a thrift store, yard sale, estate sale, antique store…you get the idea! We need to take the item and basically make it our own, plus style the item in our home! Challenge accepted!!

I decided to go straight back to that white vintage chenille blanket that I found at a church rummage sale for $2.50. Remember the blog post I did on the handmade chenille pumpkins? Just in case you did not see it, click  here to see the post.

779D07B2-075F-4981-B123-671E00562A02

I have been wanting to make a few vintage chenille pillows for our master bedroom and this challenge was perfect for that! Since I already had this blanket and the poly-fil, this practically cost me zero dollars for this challenge!!

I love how there is a few spots on the chenille blanket that has been mended over the years. I can tell the blanket was hand-sewn and I can’t help but wonder how that tear must have gotten there…but I love the character it gives!

6F337F23-85E4-4F55-B0CD-73F945D527E2.jpeg

First thing was deciding what size I wanted the pillows to be! To be honest, I just held the fabric up to my pillow shams and decided I wanted them about half of the size (give or take) of the shams. After deciding on the size, I cut my first pillow template from the vintage chenille blanket. I cut two pieces per pillow.

90E6157F-3214-46F1-9FBF-D6F755125984

I chose to leave the fringe on one pillow, to dress it up a bit more!

6DCE3571-B7B2-478B-B92A-ED342E4A43D0

Place right sides of fabric together, pin or not pin, if you prefer. The one below is the fringe pillow, so if you chose to use fringe, make sure to tuck it inside!

71417C79-7FE3-4E05-B45A-33FDA0E90860

Sew all sides, leaving enough room on one edge open, so you can flip your pillow inside out, then stuff with poly-fil!

30551EE0-108D-45A1-A180-2D6ECF07ED52

Wallah! You have an easy vintage chenille pillow! I made a total of 3 and I love the one with the fringe best of all!

June Thrift Challenge Blog Hop

June Thrift Challenge Blog Hop

Hey ya’ll! I have teamed up with several blogger buddies for June’s Thrift Challenge. This month, we have changed up our challenge a bit. The rules are to purchase an item from a thrift store, yard sale, garage sale, estate sale OR revamp/upcycle a piece you already own which no longer works in our home. As always, there is no set budget but we like to keep it as budget friendly as possible.

With the change in rules, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. When my Grandmother passed away, 11 years ago, I was allowed to go through her personal belongings and pick out what I would like to have of hers. One of the items I chose was this red quilt.

5E43E628-501A-410C-B8C8-053F56310215

Over the years, my own little family used it for picnics, beach trips and nap time and as you can see, it had had it share of wear. I placed it in a box in our attic to save and hopefully one day, repurpose it.

62D90185-9C47-47E5-ADC1-89B845EC5609

When the challenge rules changed for this month, I literally jumped for joy, at the idea I had to make pillows from the quilt. It was super simple!

08E7881D-79F4-4E9B-AC18-23822AB86C93

I grabbed a pillow cover that I already had and used it as the pattern for my pillows. I cut two pieces of the quilt for each pillow and sewed together, added poly-fil and wa-lah, the pillows were complete! Quick, easy and free! I had all of the supplies on hand for making the quilt pillows. The poly-fil is super budget friendly. You can grab it at Joann Fabric and Craft Store for around $5-$10, depending if its on sale or you use a coupon. You can check out my under IG highlights “DIY Pillows”.

June Clearance Challenge

June Clearance Challenge

For this month’s Clearance Challenge, I knew exactly what I was going to use for the challenge. I headed to our local Five Below store before our vacation (check my IG highlights/posts) to grab a few items for our newly renovated pop-up camper. Do y’all know what amazing items they have in this store and all for under five bucks?! Ok, ok, let me show you! I bought a black and cream boho chic rug and a cute little gray fuzzy foot stool for the camper. Both were $5 each!

04A5E20A-43A7-4A88-9742-3601DD5A5A00

I also purchased a gray and white plastic outdoor mat for $5. It worked perfectly for our “front porch” area on the outside of the camper.

0404748D-3002-46EA-8C1E-92C0A19F4AB5

But, perhaps the best bargain of all was the felt letter board that I found on clearance for $1! It was regularly priced for $5, but when I got to the register, it was on clearance for $1!

D89BA422-2047-46BB-961B-D65E4F29971F

See? You really can decorate your home or camper, while being budget friendly. I hope you take a moment to hop on over to each of my friend blog’s and see what these creative ladies have found on clearance. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Lots of summer vacation vibes from our family to yours!
